4th Annual Diversity Celebration Right Before BB:T&N Gathering Appalachian State University will host the 4th annual Diversity Celebration on Tuesday April 5th from 3-8 p.m. in Plemmons Student Center on the ASU campus. The celebration is free to students and the public and will consist of a variety of cultural events including Black Banjo Then and Now participants the Ebony Hillbillies (an all African American string band from New York City),Cheick Hamala Diabate (a master Malian musician), and Sule Greg Wilson (drumming and dancing extraordinaire). ASU's Appalachian Heritage Council is also proud to announce their spring Appalachian Heritage and Music week will run from April 4-8. The Appalachian Heritage Council is a student run and funded programming organization on campus dedicated to preserving and promotting Appalachian culture. The week's events will all be free and will consist of a number of music, dance and cultural events. The week's schedule has not been finalized, but last fall's week included: luthier presentation, bee keeping and quilting exhibits, flatfooting dance workshops (including local African-American clogger Arthur Grimes), music performances by Frank Lee, James Leva, and other local acts, a ballad swap, fly-fishing casting workshop, and a couple barn dances. More information will be released as the schedule is finalized.
