The Association of Black Traditional String Players, Inc. Statement of Purpose
Black traditional string playing on the banjo, mandolin, fiddle,
guitar, other instruments, and the traditional percussion that
propels it is an art form which embodies the history, heritage, and
culture of Africans and African Americans, past and present. The
African and Post-African string tradition demands to be researched,
documented, preserved, revived, and promoted. Acknowledging the
significance of the art form to all areas of the African Diaspora,
particularly the United States, is vital. This ensemble and solo
tradition is significant both as a precursor and as a companion to
spirituals and gospel, blues, jazz, rhythm and blues, and hip hop.
Corollary to this is the responsibility to identify, educate,
mentor, and encourage current and future players to ensure that the
tradition will continue. To acknowledge our respect, pride,
reverence and esteem for the ancestors who passed on these
traditions of African and African American culture and to honor the
contributions they have made, that we are making, and that future
generations will make, we establish The Association of Black
Traditional String Players, Inc.
